DIY Wood Curtain Rods and Brackets

Make these simple and budget friendly wood curtain rods and brackets for an elevated farmhouse look

So I am all for beautiful DIY projects that look expensive, but are actually super affordable!

Our whole house was in desperate need of some curtains, curtain rods, and brackets, but if you have been shopping around you know those items can be kind of expensive.

Also who in the world thought it would be acceptable to sell curtains by the panel… Curtains should come with at least two panels per pack.

I really wanted to go with a modern farmhouse theme for the curtain rods that I could carry through out the house, so I did what I do best and went to Lowes in search of a solution!

Originally, I was thinking of using copper pipe (which I still may do in the spare bedroom) but then I stumbled upon these wooden closet rods.

As soon as I saw the lovely price tag of $19.98 for a 10ft piece I knew it was a match made in DIY-closet-rod-into-curtain-rod-heaven!

The only thing left to figure out was what would hold my new lovely rods onto the wall. I found these corbels at Home Depot for $2.54 a piece. I was sold and if you are too this is how you can DIY yourself some beautiful wooden curtain rods:

Supplies:

Curtain Bracket Placement

Decide where on your corbels you want your rod to sit. I went with 1 inch back from the front of the corbel. Then decide how deep you want the rod to sit. I decided on 1 inch deep because my rods were 1-3/8 inches in diameter.

Use a hole saw to cut out a semi-circle on the corbels for the rod to sit in.

Now you will have to measure and cut the length for the rods. I measured the width of my window and added about 6 inches total so I had 3 inches stick out on both sides.

Staining Wood Curtain Rods and Brackets

Now the fun part, staining the curtain rods and brackets. This portion is purely preference, you can use a more natural looking wood stain or go with something like I did and use a gray stain.

I applied about 3 coats of stain, letting them dry in between each coat. I like to use a cotton cloth instead of a paint brush to apply the stain.

After I was happy with the stain color, I used some white paint to give the brackets and rods a little dimension. I dry brushed the paint on and used another cotton rag to wipe certain areas as I went. Just play around with the color until you’re happy.

After both the rod and corbels were dry I measured and marked the wall where I wanted the corbel to sit in relation to the window.

Here are the best tips for hanging curtain rods and brackets to make the window look larger!

After marking both sides of the window, I simply drilled my screw in and hung the corbels. You may have to play with how deep you drill the screw into the wall in order to make sure the corbel fits tightly on the wall, if it’s loose and wobbly drill the screw in further.

Finally it was time to add the curtains to the rod and place them on the brackets.

Of course, my little helper was there to remind me not to put the curtains in her way because she still needed to be able to inspect the outside world for any signs of imminent danger.

That’s it, super easy and budget friendly wooden curtain rods and brackets. I followed those same steps for the rest of the windows in the house.

For now we will leave the sheer curtains up until I can decide on the design direction I want to take in these spaces.
