How To Paint Tile That’s Durable: Bathroom Makeover Part One
Easily update outdated tile & flooring with this simple paint method

My favorite kinds of DIYs are the ones that make a big difference on a little budget!
We have been living in & renovating our farmhouse for just over a year now & we have made so much progress, but there is a room that has been untouched…
Our half bathroom has remained exactly the same since we moved in & it is time for a change y’all!
Let me show you what we are working with:

Have you ever seen such a vibrant lime green 😅
It’s not a huge space but it does need a lot of work, luckily it’s all cosmetic.
I have big plans for this space but a small budget so lets start with the two most important parts: the floors & the walls.
Paint is an easy & budget friendly way to update any space & I have found a paint that will work on both, Beyond Paint!
Bathroom Makeover: Painting Walls & Tile
Supplies:
-Beyond Paint (Licorice & Bright White)
-3/8 Nap Roller
-Small Brush
-Stencil
Prepping The Space
We started by getting the space ready for the makeover by removing the toilet & sink.
If you don’t plan on replacing the toilet or sink you can leave them in place & work around them.

We also scraped the popcorn ceilings, you can see that tutorial here.
Once the toilet & sink were removed we started working on the baseboards & door trim.

The plan for the walls is to add tall board & batten, add thicker baseboards, & new door trim.

Once everything was removed I filled in all the nail holes & imperfections on the walls.
Then I deep cleaned the bathroom to removed all the dust from the walls & floors.
Painting the Walls
Finally it’s time to say goodbye to the lime green!
The trim boards will all be installed later, but first the walls need to be painted.
I am going bold in this bathroom, painting the walls and trim Beyond Paint’s Licorice color!
Beyond Paint isn’t normally a “wall paint” brand, but because I will also be painting the board and batten the same color it seemed like the perfect choice for the walls too.

It is a true, rich black paint & the best part is I don’t need to prime the walls first!
Beyond Paint is a primer, bonder, & finisher all in one which is exactly what we needed to tackle this lime green.

I used a 3/8 nap roller to coat the walls in Licorice.
Y’all I will be honest I did not think any paint would be able to cover this lime green without primer, but the Licorice covered the lime green completely in just two coats!

It’s slightly textured making it perfect for hiding imperfections & filled nail holes.
I am also super impressed with how even the coverage is, black is not the easiest color to paint on walls but Beyond Paint self leveled amazingly.
How To Paint Tile That Won’t Chip
Prepping The Floor
Before I started adding the actual trim pieces I decided to tackle the floor.

I used Krud Kutter to degrease the floor & remove any residue.

Prepping the floor correctly is a main factor in getting the paint to bond correctly so that it won’t chip.
Base Paint Layer
After it was oh so sparkly clean & dry I rolled on the first layer of Licorice paint.

Make sure you are really pushing the paint into the grout lines, even using a brush to dap it in if necessary.
Here is how it looked after just one coat:

I let this layer dry overnight before doing one more coat of the black Licorice.

Once that layer was dry it was time to add the design to the tiles.
Adding The Tile Design

You can purchase a stencil or use tape to create a pattern you like.
I used a Cricut machine & stencil vinyl to create my own diamond shaped stencil.

Next, I stuck my stencils onto the dry tiles & used a brush to dab the Bright White over them.

My best advice for stenciling is to make sure there is not too much paint on your brush & use a dabbing motion for applying the paint.
The Bright White is the perfect contrast to the Licorice paint!
Sealing The Tile

After 24 hours I rolled on a light layer of the Beyond Paint Sealer.
This sealer self levels & provides heat/water resistance!
The key is to make sure you are not applying too thick of a sealer layer, it’s better to do two thin coats than one heavy coat of sealer.

The satin sheen of the sealer gave the tiles exactly the finish I was hoping for.
Beyond Paint cures to a durable & washable surface making it more durable than other paint!
Board & Batten

Now that the floor is all wrapped up, It’s time to finish the trim work on the walls!
I went with a tall board & batten configuration because this look is timeless & makes the ceiling look so much taller.

After the battens were installed, sanded, & caulked I painted all the trim work in Licorice.

I used the same nap roller to apply the paint & a small brush to get into the crevices.

Where the board & batten stopped I applied this charming vintage wallpaper!
Half Bathroom Partial Reveal

Never doubt the power of paint!
The first phase of this half bathroom makeover is complete & I could not be happier.

You would never know these walls used to be a daunting lime green!
The flooring looks completely updated & adds fun character to the space.
Plus painting them rather than demoing them saved me so much time and money!

I am super impressed with the coverage of Beyond Paint & so thankful I didn’t have to spend extra days priming my life away 😅
It only took me 3 quartz of the Licorice paint to cover the walls, trim, & flooring!

The next phase of this renovation will involve plumbing our new bathroom fixtures (right now they are just placed in their respective spots) & adding new lighting!
Let me know what you think of our bathroom renovation so far & what flooring is on your list to makeover.
