$100 Room Challenge​: Linen Closet Week 2

Do you know when you see those really beautiful “after” photos of a project & you’re just like “wow that looks great!” This is not that post…yet! We are in week 2 of our linen closet renovation & we are in deep y’all!

Erin from Lemons, Lavender, & Laundry started this challenge a couple of years ago (you can read more about that here). Basically, a bunch of very talented bloggers get together to take on renovating a space for $100 or less! We have 1 month to complete the challenge & the hope is to have a swoon-worthy room at the end, all while staying in budget.

We are not new to the renovation game, but kneedeep into a project will always have me unsettled. The mess gives me anxiety y’all & that is exactly where we are.

Lets just remind ourselves of what we are working with:

So yea, that’s not good… but if it turns out anything like my inspiration board for this project then it will be swoon-worthy, eventually. This week I went through & decluttered the whole closet.

I made 3 piles:

• Keep
• Donate
• Garbage

At the end of the deep clean I was left with this:

Still not great, but at least I was able to get rid of the unused clutter items.

Next, it was time to take down the ugly metal shelving. Of course, this lovely shelving leaves lots of little holes in the wall that need to be filled.

After that, it was time for the fun part, paint! Paint is an amazing tool for any renovation because it completely transforms a room for relatively cheap. I had leftover Pure White paint by Sherwin Williams so that was a win for me & my budget!

I don’t always choose light & bright for small spaces, the coat closet is an example of where I went with a medium gray, but for a linen closet I want that fresh & clean look.

One money-saving tip I use is to line your plastic or metal paint trays with foil so that once you are done you can discard the remaining paint without tossing the whole tray!

While that saved me money, I wish I would have went ahead & bought my normal edge work paint brush. I was trying to be cheap about it becuase of the tight budget, but it ended up making the job harder & wasnt worth it. So buy the paintbrush yall!

Awe so fresh & clean! The closet already feels bigger now that the yellowy gray is off the walls. Next week we will be tackling the DIY budget savvy shelving!
