Walk-In Closet Design On A Budget: Reveal Part 1
Create the walk-in closet of your dreams all on a DIY budget
Y’all…
Has this renovation felt like it has taken as long for you as it has for me?
I am convinced this project took as long as it did to build the Great Wall Of China.
We have not had a closet since May!
Which is kind of our fault since we removed the original one to open up our master bedroom (no regrets though 😉)!
That is 9 months (I just did that math & now I am even more shocked)!
It has taken a toll on us for sure but now seeing it all come together has reminded me why we started this project in the first place.
If you have been following along since the beginning you know this is what the space used to look like:

The previous owners used it as an office we think…
Although, it did have a closet which we converted into our new laundry room!

I think we will really love being able to have the laundry room right in our closet & off our bathroom!
This renovation was definitely the biggest one we have ever taken on because plumbing, electrical, doors, & walls needed to be moved.
Not to mention before we even started we had to scrape the ceiling & remove all the carpet.

We also closed off the original entrance to the room & opened up a new entry way coming in from our master bathroom.
Adding a half wall for the laundry area helped to separate it from the rest of the space but still made it feel open & not like an old closet.

Creating the layout for the space was my favorite part by far.
You can check out the entire design board & plan here!
Our next step was to add DIY built-ins out of MDF for our hanging spaces.
MDF is a super budget friendly & easy to manipulate with a table or circular saw.
We painted the built-in & walls Pure White by Sherwin Williams & the ceiling is Gray Owl.
I love how the painted ceiling makes the room look taller than it really is!
You can find all my favorite painted ceiling ideas here

The closet rods we bought from Home Depot & cut down to size with a pipe cutter.
These were the best price I could find on gold closet rods & brackets!
We also added this swanky new chandelier that feels like the cherry on top of this project!
Thee next built-in section we took on was the shoe towers.
I was so excited for these to go up!
There is something extra special about all your favorite shoes on display.

The scariest part of this closet was building the drawers…
We had never built drawers before & they can be a little intimidating, but I came up with this super simple method to make it easy & way way way less scary!
The gold hardware was simple to install & makes the closet feel extra glamorous.

We also installed tile for the first time ever, this project definitely had a lot of first for us!
You can see everything NOT to do when tiling a floor here
The tile is gorgeous & just subtle enough, the color is Pine Wood White.
I big puffy heart love that it looks like hardwood flooring, but if there is ever a leak from the laundry room we will be safe.

Adding the glass cabinet was definitely right call!
That is the same one I shared with y’all on our Instagram stories that I found on Facebook Marketplace.
It’s amazing what a little paint will do!
The gold handles match the drawer ones & the small knobs match perfectly.
I can’t wait to fill it with all the pretty things!
This renovation was definitely one for the books.
We learned so many new skills & were able to do everything on our own which feels extra good!
Can we just look at the before one more time pretty please?!

It’s hard to believe this is the same space!

That’s a wrap for part one of the walk-in closet reveal y’all!
Stay tuned for part two where I actually fill it with all the things & share my favorite closet organization ideas!
It looks amazing!!! What a great idea to have the laundry room so close by!
Thanks so much Michelle! It has made a big dent in the “floor clothes” pile!
I have just found your page!! You have done an amazing job! I bought a fixer-upper that had been empty for 5 years. Sub-floors had to be replaced in places, roof, and the list goes on! We lived without a kitchen for 3 months. I know how challenging it is to live without what you need to get dressed easily for work, to fix a meal, & all that goes along with it!! I LOVE what you have done!!
Thanks so much Anna! Renovating isn’t for the weak that’s for sure, it can be really challenging but in the end it will all be worth it!
What were the dimensions of the “office” when you started this?? Absolutely amazing!!
Hi Jordyn! the dimensions were 11 1/2′ by 6′!
I swear this sound similar to my current renovation with my new home. I closed off the door to the room that was once an office and combined it with a bedroom. I had to have the wall removed that separated the rooms. There was a closet in the office that I had removed and one in the bedroom also. They were so rudely small lol. I have a window in the space just like your space. I’m having barn doors put up where the wall was removed. I’m so excited! I’ll have to find someone to transform the office space into a walk in closet but seeing the transformation of it all has been an adventure. Your space looks absolutely amazing!
That is such a fun project! Thank you so much!
