Modern Farmhouse Kitchen Design On A Budget
All the best modern farmhouse kitchen design ideas to make your renovation budget friendly
I am about to show you something horrifying…
Like really really terrible, it’s our kitchen before photos.
If you have been following along this little blog for anytime at all you know we bought our dream farmhouse & acreage in May!
We love the land & the location is perfect, close to my family & not far from his.

The only issue is the house…
Don’t get me wrong the layout is okay & it has good bones. Nothing we can’t work with.
On our initial walk thru we knew immediately the kitchen needed to be dealt with first!

This is the listing photo, which made it look a lot larger than it was.
There was not a lot of cabinet space & no upper cabinets which is a problem.
Behind that back wall was the laundry room & some cubbies, plus one of the doors that lead to the garage.

We decided to expand the kitchen by busting open the back wall & closing off that door since there was a second one leading into the garage anyways.
We relocated the laundry room to our still in progress walk-in closet.

Once the room was opened up we realized the current window was too small & replaced it with a wider one.
Modern Farmhouse Design

Now that we have an empty space it’s time to make some plans for our new kitchen!
I don’t really love categorizing it as
Modern farmhouse is the closest I could come to giving it a label.
Paint Color

For the walls we are following through with our dinning room color & painting it Alabaster.
I have a fondness for white walls in the kitchen.
It’s a space that I want to feel bright, airy, & open but also cozy.
Alabaster checks all those boxes!
Cabinets

Maybe this choice isn’t such a shock but I am dreaming of clean white cabinets.
We are going with Diamond brand cabinets because we need something durable (sticky toddler hands).
White is classic & it opens up the possibility of adding other colors & finishes for accent cabinets or islands.
Character Cabinets

These are the pieces that make a kitchen feel warm with character.
I feel in big puffy heart love with this photo the second I saw it & it has been on my dream kitchen board from the beginning.
Sprinkling accent & character pieces in the kitchen makes the space feel extra homey & unique & it can also be done on a budget.
We snagged 2 pieces from Facebook Marketplace to build into our kitchen.

We bought this piece for $50 & plan on stripping it & staining it lighter.
I don’t know if ill keep the back as a mirror or use a different material or paint.
What do y’all think?

We also bought this piece & had it built into the kitchen.
I am currently in the process of adding trim, molding, sanding, & staining.
The dream is for it to look built-in & custom once its complete (fingers crossed)!
Flooring

The old kitchen has real hickory hardwood flooring but the laundry room did not so we needed to add more flooring that would look cohesive.
Our plan is to use brick flooring to join the rooms & make them feel like one.
I have an appreciation for the classic red brick colors but white would be pretty too, if you didn’t have a toddler & 3 massive dogs to consider 😉
Hardware

Gold hardware is not exactly classic farmhouse but it is my favorite!
For our kitchen I want to implement both knobs & pulls on the drawers & cabinets.
Backsplash

I know farmhouse is all about that subway tile, but this picket tile is a modern twist that will make a statement you won’t get sick of.
The direction of the tile will draw the eye upwards making the room feel taller.
I have also seen it in black & absolutely loved it!

Brick Flooring – Backsplash – Pendant Lights – Handles – Knobs – Faucet – Farmhouse Sink – Cabinet – Shelving
Those are the design elements I am dreaming of for our new kitchen!
We still have a long way to go, but we are making progress & this board gives me a real vision for the spaces future.
