No house is perfect…
Sometimes you are stuck with an odd-shaped room or a closet that’s not quite right, but the most common complaint I hear about is small bedrooms!

Take our master bedroom in our newly purchased farmhouse for example:

This is how it looked when we first seen the house & I immediately knew something would have to be done!
I wanted our bedroom to feel bright, cozy, & grand.
There is no reason you should be forced to live in a cave like atmosphere just because the original builder didn’t realize you are a king size bed fan & want to feel like you’re in a luxurious hotel when you go to sleep at night.
This bedroom was a problem I knew we could solve with some decor changes, small updates, & a few diy projects!
Here Are 10 Ways To Make a Small Bedroom Feel Bigger:
Remove Popcorn Ceilings
Our bedroom was cursed with popcorn ceilings, actually, the majority of the house was.
I have never been a fan of them because they make the ceiling appear to be lower than it actually is.
Removal sounds like a bigger ordeal than it is yall I promise!
This entire ceiling took Adam about an hour to scrape & 30 minutes to spot sand.
Once the ceiling is nice & clean apply a fresh coat of white ceiling paint & your room will instantly feel bigger!

Choose Wood Flooring & A Large Rug
I know I know carpet is usually the go to for bedrooms…
Maybe its the whole toddler & 4 large dogs thing but I despise carpet of any sort.
Removing the sagging carpet in this room & replacing it with darker laminate made the room feel like it was hiding extra square footage underneath all that saggy grossness.
I am still a firm believer in a large rug though to give the space some clear dimensions.
This one was a super budget savvy find from Amazon!

Paint Colors
Just a couple cans of paint & an hour or two can completely change a room.
Choose super light colors or go bold with very dark colors.
The in-between colors & grays make a space feel more cramped.
Remember when I painted the ceiling black during our back patio makeover? That made the enclosure feel so much taller than it actually was!
Here are all my favorite dark & moody bedrooms
For this room, I went with very light & chose Gray Owl from Behr. It is the

Swap Out Swinging Doors
This is obviously not practical for the main entrance of the room, but it is the perfect solution for closets & bathrooms in the room.
We built these sliding barn doors to replace the door leading to our bathroom.
Having two smaller doors on either side of the opening makes it appear to be so much larger.
You can buy barn doors or build your own for cheap like we did!

Add Trim To Windows & Doors
This is one of my favorite DIY’s because its easy, cheap, & makes a huge difference!
We framed in all the windows, doors, & added tall baseboards using plane pine wood to elevate the room & make it look grand!
They can be as simple or grand as you want but the taller you take the trim the higher the ceiling height will appear to be.

Hang Curtains Tall
If you aren’t feeling the trim you can always get away with just hanging your curtains as high up as possible!
The closer to the ceiling the better.
Just be sure the bottom of the curtain drapes the ground romantically or at-least kisses the floor.
These curtains are super soft, pretty, & also blackout curtains!

Add Mirrors
Mirrors are an easy trick for making any space feel larger.
They reflect light & give the illusion of a bigger & brighter space.
For our room we have the dresser mirror & also our diy sliding doors mirrors!

Lighting
Obviously the more light you can let into a space the less cave like it will feel.
Candlelight, lamps, & overhead lighting can make a room feel cozy & bright.
My go to bulb color is bright white because it makes the space feel clean.
We have lots of lighting in this room from candles & lamps on the nightstands, our new overhead fan, & also a new wooden chandelier in the office!

Bright Bedding
Bedding is usually the focal point of the room along with the bed itself.
If your room feels cramped try lowering your mattress, use a smaller box spring or thinner mattress to accomplish this.
Choose bright & light bedding for the bed itself.
Our duvet cover is bright white with a sweet little pattern, the duvet is fluffy & makes the bed feel like one from a fancy hotel.
For the sheets I follow suit with lighter colors if not white for those also.
I also like to add a quit for dimension.

Declutter
My main tip for making any space feel larger is to declutter the surfaces.
Clutter makes a space feel cramped & dirty, two things I never want for my bedroom.
I keep only essentials out for display & hide the rest in cute baskets or the top drawer of our nightstands.

Those are my 10 best tips for making your space feel big, bright, & beautiful!
This room feels completely different after we made these changes, it’s hard to believe it’s even the same space!
