Design a vintage inspired boys nursery that feels classic, cozy, and timeless with these easy ideas

Designing our baby boy’s nursery was one of the most fun projects I’ve tackled in our home.

I wanted the space to feel classic, cozy, and timeless rather than overly trendy or themed. My goal was a room that would grow with him and feel just as charming years from now as it does today.

The result is a vintage inspired boys nursery featuring plaid wallpaper, beadboard wainscoting, and classic vintage touches throughout the space.

Today I’m sharing the full nursery reveal along with the design inspiration behind the room!

The Inspiration Behind This Vintage Boys Nursery

When I started planning the nursery, I kept coming back to the idea of creating a room that felt classic and nostalgic. I made over this space a few years ago and turned it into Eli’s playroom.

I wanted to keep the vintage feel of that space but make it even cozier for our new baby.

Instead of bright primary colors or cartoon characters, I leaned into:

cozy textures
classic patterns
timeless furniture

I also wanted the nursery to feel warm and layered, almost like a cozy old cabin or going to a fun summer camp.

The color palette came together around a mix of soft blues, warm wood tones, plaid patterns, and a few pops of color to add warmth and personality.

The DIY Beadboard Walls

One of the biggest features in the nursery is the beadboard wainscoting that wraps around the room.

Adding beadboard was such a great way to instantly give the space character and architectural interest without spending a fortune.

We installed the beadboard on the lower half of the walls and painted it a soft blue shade that brings a calming feel to the room.

Not only does it add visual interest, but beadboard is also incredibly durable, which is perfect for a kid’s space that will eventually see lots of toys and activity.

The Plaid Nursery Walls

Above the beadboard, I wanted to do something a little more unique.

That’s where the plaid wallpaper comes in. This wallpaper is from WallBlush and it’s called Carolina.

Plaid is such a classic pattern that works beautifully in a vintage inspired space. Using wallpaper to achieve this look was way easier than trying to paint the plaid pattern myself.

The soft neutral tones in the plaid help keep the room feeling calm while still adding plenty of visual interest.

The combination of plaid walls and beadboard gives the nursery a layered look that feels both classic and cozy.

A Cozy Corner for Baby

Every nursery needs a comfortable place to sit, feed, and rock your baby, so creating a cozy corner was a must.

The warm leather chair adds a rich texture to the space and balances out the lighter tones in the room. It also fits perfectly with the vintage inspired style we were going for.

Next to the chair is a simple white nightstand that keeps essentials within reach while adding a bright contrast against the blue walls.

I also ordered this outlet extender with multiple inputs charging bank from Amazon. A lot things need to be plugged in like my breast pump, phone charger, the lamp, the baby’s sound machine, etc so this little extender is a must have!

Another item I highly recommend for this corner is a color changing light bulb. I ordered mine after the first couple nights of late night feeding. These lightbulbs will let you change the light bulb color for nighttime feedings, they are much better on the eyes.

The Crib and Canopy

The crib area is the focal point of the room. I knew I wanted this exact crib the moment we found out we were expecting. The design is classic and the turned wood spindles add a vintage flair.

To make the space feel extra special, I added a mustard yellow canopy above the crib. The canopy adds a soft, cozy feeling and introduces a pop of color that complements the blue walls beautifully.

It’s such a simple addition, but it really helps define the crib space and adds a whimsical touch to the nursery.

I incorporated some subtle duck decor in this nursery as well and found these crib sheets that were so darn cute!

The Plaid Rug

To tie the entire room together, I chose a large plaid rug that echoes the pattern on the walls.

Layering plaid in both the rug and the walls creates a cohesive design while still keeping the space soft and cozy.

The rug also adds warmth to the room and provides a comfortable spot for playtime in the future.

Changing Table Area

Another crucial part of any nursery is the changing table area.

This changing table compliments the crib with its wooden turned legs and warm wood color. The drawers are nice and deep for all my storage needs.

I also added these wooden peg hooks to hang his outfits from. It helps keep his new clothes handy when I he is ready for an outfit change and also doubles as decor.

To keep the essential items in reach I also added these hanging baskets to store diapers, wipes, cream, and swaddles. These horse hooks I painted red and match the vintage esthetic of the space.

I kept the cute DIY chalk board gallery wall above the changing table because I love it and it still fits the theme perfectly.

Nursery Closet Organization

This nursery was the first thing I built when we found out we had a baby on the way. Before I created this closet, this space acted as a sensory space for the playroom.

All the hanging areas are made out of MDF because it is budget friendly and easy to work with.

I use this same method every time I build a closet and I have built a bunch of them!

For this nursery closet I also used this dresser system to add drawers and built more shelving on top of it.

This part isn’t really necessary but I love using these velvet hangers to hang clothes. They are the same ones I use for Eli’s and for our clothes since they come in multiple sizes.

Vintage Toys and Decor

One of my favorite parts of designing this nursery was incorporating vintage inspired toys and decor.

Pieces like the wooden toy chest, rocking horse, and classic toys add so much personality to the room. They make the space feel collected and lived-in rather than overly styled.

Vintage pieces also help create a nursery that feels unique and meaningful instead of looking like it came straight out of a catalog.

Another thing I added to this room was this hammock swing. This isn’t for the baby, it’s for Eli. I wanted something he could do while I am tending to the baby. It’s a great way for him to feel included and also to occupy him.

I also added these red checkered roman shades to the windows. They are cordless and add an eclectic flair to the space. They were super simple to install and filter light perfectly.

A Nursery Designed to Grow With Him

One of the most important things I wanted when designing this nursery was a space that would grow with our little boy.

The classic patterns, vintage inspired decor, and neutral color palette will transition easily as he gets older. Many of the pieces in the room could just as easily work in a toddler room or even a big kid space later on.

Creating a nursery that feels timeless means we won’t need to completely redesign the room in just a few years.
