Top Designer Chosen Trim Colors That Aren’t White

Add character & dimension to your space by choosing a trim color that isn’t white

It’s time to ditch the white y’all!

If you saw my living room design board you probably knew this was coming…

I just can’t help myself, I have been swooning over all the amazing painted trim I have been finding all over Pinterest!

When we bought this house I decided right away that every design decision would be made because it was something we truly loved, not just what was in trend and not what a future buyer might like (because this is our forever house 😉)!

My first step to boldness was definitely painting Eli’s trim & bead-board Rosemary by Sherwin Williams.

Next came the DIY stone wall and then the brown leather couch, now I’m on a roll with no regrets!

Not that this is super daring because after all it is just paint, but it definitely goes against the crisp white trim norm and I am on board.

Here are just a few of my favorite painted trim color ideas

Linen Colored Trim

Soft linen and gray colors are a great way to dip your toe into the painted trim water.

Linen Colored Trim

They are subtle while still making a statement.

This bedroom has been saved on my Pinterest multiple times because I love it so much.

The soothing linen trim color is appealing without being overwhelming and it is perfect if you are still unsure if you are on board with contrast trim.

Color: Sand by Farrow & Ball

The richness of this brown trim feels warm and cozy.

It would accent perfectly with linen colored furniture & natural wood flooring.

Green Trim Ideas

Green is an amazing trim color because it can fit so many different design styles based on the hue you choose.

Color: Juniper Ash by Behr

The perfect bluish gray-green color to accent any space but I specifically like the way it contrasts the bright white walls in this bathroom. This color would also be adorable for playroom trim!

Color: Backwoods by Benjamin Moore

If you don’t already know, I love a green trim!

This green is the perfect hue for a calming earthy effect without being dauntingly dark.

Color: Rosemary by Sherwin Williams

For Eli’s room renovation, we went with Rosemary trim from Sherwin Williams.

It pairs perfectly with yellows and burnt oranges.

Built-in seating breakfast nook

I love it so much that when we built our breakfast nook bench I painted it the same color.

Black Trim Ideas

Black trim looks so classic and really defines a space.

kitchen renovation

Color: Black Magic by Sherwin Williams

I painted our kitchen window trim and frame black and will never go back.

The black trim provides an amazing contrast to our white kitchen and gives it a whole bunch of character.

half bathroom remodel

Color: Black Licorice by Beyond Paint

Whew this glam half bathroom still makes my heart skip a beat every time I walk into it.

If you saw what this half bathroom looked like before you know this black definitely beats out the mess it used to be…

This all black trim, board & batten, and crown moulding was a daring choice that I have zero regrets about.

Blue Trim Ideas

Blue trim is another one of my favorites, especially for larger spaces.

This serene blue trim is gorgeous and definitely swoon worthy.

I desperately wish I knew the color name of this trim but a close comparison would be Infinite Deep Sea by Behr.

Color: Skipping Stones by Dunn Edwards Dura

We have been slowly but surely renovating this bunkbed/playroom and the blue painted trim is really pulling the space together.

Color: Benjamin Moore by Stonington Gray

Ohh la la I am adding a stair renovation to our project list asap!

This gray is so delicate and brings a softness to this space.

Mauve Trim Color Ideas

Mauve, burgundy, and purple trim are so underrated in my opinion.

Home office setup ideas

Color: Poetry Plum by Sherwin Williams

When I first started designing our home office, I knew I wanted a bold color that would also be soothing to work in.

This deep purple hit the mark and then some!

I am in deep love with this color and painting the built-ins to match was the chefs kiss to this space.

There are so many great painted trim options to choose from, the possibilities really are endless.

If the contrasting trim idea still makes you a bit nervous, another option is to simply have the paint department mix a darker version of the paint you have on the walls.

Yep they can do that and it’s a really great way to provide just a hint of contrast to your space.

For our living room, I am definitely being swayed towards the black trim, especially since the stone wall we recently installed in our dining room is darker.

I think painted black trim will bring a nice flow and balance to the two connecting spaces.

  1. Hi! I absolutely love this idea, I’ve been thinking of this and I fell in love with the dark blue/gray with the lighter gray. I was just wondering what the colors are.

    1. Hi there! Those are so pretty, that room is not mine though. If you click on the “Source” below it, it will take you to that page!

  2. What color is the serene blue and who makes it? I love it? I was thinking if “Roman Column” by Lowe’s for the walls and hope the woodwork would go well. I’d get the Roman Column in a better quality paint though.

    1. Hi Lorrie, I desperately wish I knew the color name of this trim but a close comparison would be Infinite Deep Sea by Behr.

  3. We just bought an 1860 Century home and I wanted to go with wood trim but the previous owners filled all the holes with not stainable white wood filler! So I was thinking of going with painted non-white trim and everyone is looking at me like I have three heads! Seeing these photos sealed the deal – love the colour on the trim. Question… did you paint every room with the same colour throughout the house or is it different anywhere?

    1. Hi Trish! I love painted trim! It depends on the space, for rooms that are open to each other I stuck to one color. For the bunkbed/playroom we are currently renovating I painted the trim and doors the same blue I used on the beadboard! I did this in our toddlers bedroom too but went with green.

  4. Hello! In bedrooms did you paint the outside of the door the same trim as you did for the hallway and then the inside the same trim as the bedroom? I’m very torn on the doors being a different color on each side. We have beautiful solid wood doors and wondering if I just don’t paint the doors on either side? Any suggestions would be amazing! Love everything you did here!

    1. Hi Holly! You could absolutely paint both sides of the door a different color. For our trim, around the doors it stays white everywhere except for our toddlers bedroom and playroom.

Tell me something!
