Boys bathroom design ideas that are perfect for a small bathroom

It was a very tight deadline but I can honestly say this bathroom makeover was quick and easy.
Now that it’s complete I wanted to share all the small projects that went into creating a vintage inspired boys bathroom.
Plus some tips on how to make even a small bathroom feel spacious and grand, all on a budget!

Small Boys Bathroom Makeover Ideas
This portion of the bathroom is one half of a jack and Jill bathroom that connects our boys’ bedrooms together.
I absolutely love the boys sharing a shower and toilet but they each get their own sink room which is very nice. To me a jack and Jill bathroom is easier to clean but with this setup they also get some privacy in their own spaces.
This bathroom is actually one of the last remaining untouched rooms in our house. We recently completed our primary bathroom renovation and we tackled our half bathroom makeover when we first bought our house.
I would have really loved to do a full gut renovation on the entire boys bathroom but we didn’t feel that at 37 weeks pregnant that was doable…
So we opted to just makeover the nursery side sink closet.
Here’s what it looked like before:
Small Bathroom Wall Molding
After removing the vanity and wimpy baseboards the first step was to add some charm with wall molding.
My favorite way to make small rooms with low ceilings look bigger is by adding tall board and batten.
I used this same trick in our half bathroom too.
Board and batten is a classic wall treatment that is also super simple to install. Normally I use pine boards but to save time on sanding and prep work I opted to go with 2x4x6 primed boards. They are slightly more expensive but saved me a ton of time sanding.
I also added smaller boxes for an extra fancy detail.

Framing in the doors is another easy way to add detail and charm to a small space.
These doors are framed in with 1×4 side pieces and a header that uses two 1×2 pieces sandwiching a 1×6 board.
The Perfect Boys Bathroom Paint Color
Finding the perfect paint color for this bathroom makeover was easy, because it’s the same paint color I used in the nursery.
This is my most favorite vintage blue paint color, it’s called Skipping Stones by Dunn Edwards Dura.
The sheen is a matte finish and is super calming and tranquil.
Normally I like to add a splash of wallpaper above the board and batten but there is already wallpaper in the nursery and I thought color drenching the walls would be better fit.
Color drenching is another great way to make a small space appear larger. You can either leave the ceiling white like I chose too or carry the color to the ceiling also.
Small Bathroom Vanity Update
The original vanity went across the entire back wall of the bathroom.
That design provided a lot of countertop space but also made the room feel squished. So for this makeover we went with a simple, smaller black bathroom vanity.
The vanity top is a simple white ceramic that is super easy to clean and won’t stain like some granites do.
This vanity also has a lot of great drawer and cabinet space, which is a big bonus.
My most favorite part of this new vanity is the brass faucet we installed. The nozzle extends just like a kitchen sink faucet!
Whoever invented this faucet is brilliant. I use it every day to clean out bottles and pump parts.
Plus it will work great to clean up leftover toothpaste when we get to that point.
Small Bathroom Storage Ideas
Storage is always the biggest concern in a small space, especially in a bathroom.
The vanity itself provides a good bit of storage but I also wanted somewhere to hang towels, robes, and hand towels.
These wood peg hooks make hanging items easily accessible and the warm wood stain adds some warmth to the bathroom. This version of the peg hooks has the screw part built in making installation a breeze.
Have you ever noticed how cheesy bathroom trash cans can be? That’s why I usually opt for something that isn’t actually a trash can to act as a trash can. For this boys bathroom I went with a fluted black planter.
Babies and kids have one major thing in common, they both have a lot of laundry.
The laundry hamper in this space is the perfect fit for beside the vanity. It’s compact but also cutesy with a fun scallop design across the lid.
Small Bathroom Lighting Finds
Lighting is a crucial aspect of every room makeover.
I like to always include at least two types of lighting in a space.
For this bathroom I used a combination of ambient lighting and task lighting.
The ambient lighting is the new 3 bulb vanity light. The glass has a beautiful fluted feature that perfectly disperses the light around the bathroom.
I also added some fun task lighting with this sweet little checkered lamp. It’s whimsical looking and serves as the perfect night light.
Boys Bathroom Artwork
In our house artwork goes in every room, and in the bathroom I wanted simple bathroom decor.
For this boys bathroom I added these vintage looking duck prints. Normally I like to print off my own free art but these were a budget friendly Amazon find!
The ledge of the board and batten made displaying this art easy. The frames are simply leaning against the wall, no nail holes required.
Small Bathroom Mirror Idea
Mirrors are a sneaky way to make a small space look bigger.
They reflect light and help the room appear larger than it actually is. Originally in this bathroom there was a standard builder grade frameless mirror.
We removed it a while ago to put in our outdoor gym.
For this bathroom makeover I went with a 30″ round mirror with a rope detailing.
This mirror is a great size for the space and the rope detailing adds a fun design detail.
Boys Bathroom Makeover
Not bad for a super quick, last minute bathroom makeover!
I am so happy with how this space turned out and I can’t believe we were able to finish it before baby Henry arrived.
Every detail is my favorite and I love that this bathroom will be able to grow with Henry as he gets older.
For a little over $500 this feels like a completely different space.
