7 Tips For Choosing The Perfect Paint Color
USE THESE 7 TIPS TO CHOOSE THE PERFECT PAINT COLOR FOR YOUR ROOM
Do you ever just stand in front of the paint section & wish the perfect paint color would choose you?
It can be really overwhelming when you have a million colors to choose from, so I wanted to share my method for choosing the perfect color for your space.
These are the same tips I used when picking the color for our One Room Challenge Nursery renovation. This week we completed painting the trim, walls, & shiplap!

BEFORE WE EVER PARTICIPATED IN THE ONE ROOM CHALLENGE WE DID A PRACTICE RUN IN OUR OFFICE, THEN OUR FIRST REAL CHALLENGE WAS THE LAUNDRY ROOM MAKEOVER, FOLLOWED BY THE NURSERY & OUR LAST CHALLENGE WAS OUR GARAGE!
Tip 1: Find Some Inspo
This is how I start all of my projects, scrolling through Pinterest.
I love to see how different colors work in other people’s rooms & draw inspiration from them.
Find a range of colors you are gravitating to & write them down to take to the store later.
For every project, I start I create a board full of wall, ceiling, & trim colors, plus furniture ideas.
Tip 2: Create A Design Board
Every project also gets a design board!
In week 1 I shared the design board for this nursery.
A board is great for organizing your thoughts & making sure the room’s colors & furniture have a nice flow.
Tip 3: Neutral or Not
Its time to decide whether your wall color decor is gonna be “pop” of the room.
If you want to have bold decor or change out the room’s decor frequently I recommend going with a neutral wall color.
If you want your decor & furniture to be more neutral than feel free to go crazy with color!
Tip 4: Choose Some Samples
Now its time to take that list you made earlier & head to the paint store.
I like to narrow down my selection to four colors & get sample sizes of each.
Four seems way less intimidating than a million & the sample sizes are inexpensive.
Plus they are great for small projects so they won’t be wasted!
Tip 5: See Them In The Room
Using the samples, paint a small section of the room & label each color with a sticky note (trust me it’s hard to remember which is which).
This is a super important step because each room gets different natural light, which will make the color look different than it does on the paint chip.
Tip 6: Choose The Correct Sheen
Sheen plays a super important part in making sure the paint color is right for your room.
Flat Sheen has no shine at all & is better for low traffic rooms like a bedroom or office
Eggshell has a little shine & you can clean up the walls with a wet rag
Satin is my go-to sheen because it works well with moisture & is much easier to clean, plus it has a good amount of sine without looking glossy
Semi-Gloss is what I use onboard & batten, trim, & molding. It has a glossy look without being crazy shiny
Hi-Gloss Enamel works great on furniture/cabinets & is super durable. It is the shiniest of the sheens
Tip 7: Don’t Overthink It
Even if you use all these tips there will be cases where you are just not happy with the color once it’s up.
Luckily its just paint, it can be painted over easily & is the most budget-savvy way to update a room, so don’t put a ton of pressure on it, just go with your gut.
I used all these tips when choosing the paint colors for the nursery & I am in love with how it turned out!
The shiplap was a dingy yellow, so it got a fresh start with Sherwin Williams Pure White.
We carried that bright white throughout the room with the trim & molding.
For the other 3 walls, I chose a pretty pastel blue, Sea Air by Valspar.
