DIY Large Christmas Sign
CREATE THIS SUPER SIMPLE LARGE CHRISTMAS SIGN USING PLYWOOD & VINYL
Welcome back y’all to this week’s Deck the Home Challenge!
All these Christmas challenges are definitely getting me in the holly jolly spirit.
This week’s challenge was to build a Christmas sign & it just so happens that DIY large Christmas signs are my favorite thing to build!
I made a large fall sign that will be coming down this weekend to be replaced with this new sign!
This wood sign was so simple & budget savvy to make I can’t wait to share it with you.
Wood signs are my weakness, but they can be crazy expensive so now that I have a cheap way to DIY my own, my heart & my wallet are happy!
Supplies:
- 1/2 Thick Plywood
- 1×2 Pine Boards
- Spray Paint
- Vinyl or Stencils
- Minwax Stain
Process:

First I cut my plywood down to my preferred size.
I went with 3×3 for this sign, I wanted a different shape than my usual rectangle.
After you cut it down to your preferred size, sand it, then wipe off any excess dust.

For this sign I went with Rust-oleum Colonial Red spray paint.
You can use regular paint also, but I needed to create this sign during nap time & spray paint is so much faster for me to apply, plus I instantly fell in love with that color!

While the plywood was drying I worked on the pine boards.
I measured around the plywood & cut the 1x2s to size, two of the boards need to be cut a little longer to overlap the short sides.
This way is much easier than mitering the edges to 45-degree angles & I am all about easy.

Once the pine boards are cut, its time to start staining.
I am in deep love with Minwax’s Hickory gel stain.
You can apply it with a brush or rag, I’ve done it both ways & always love the results.

Next, it’s time to attach the frame to the plywood, I use my nail gun with 1 1/4 nails.
The easiest way to do this is to make sure the bottom of the pine is flush with the bottom of the plywood.
Keep your nails low on the board so that you don’t accidentally shoot through the top.
It happens to me about once a project… I think it just builds character.

Now its time for the fun part!
You can either use stencils or make lettering with a Cricut & vinyl.
I just got a Cricut for my birthday & I will be using it for absolutely everything I possibly can because I’m obsessed with it y’all!
If you come over & my toilet paper is monogrammed mind your business.
Ta-Da

Thats it! You now have a beautiful sign for a quarter of the cost!
This sign definitely makes me happy dance every time I walk past it.

You will be able to find me curled up on the couch with the fire going, gazing at this sign until the fireworks go off on New Years!

I hope y’all love this months project as much as I do.
